Colonoscopy: When you need it - and when you don't

A colonoscopy is usually only needed once every five to ten years. Repeating the test more often than necessary provides little benefit especially since colon cancer grows slowly. Some health plans will not pay for the test if you have it more than necessary. Risks and complications associated with a colonoscopy are rare, but can include bleeding, tears, and possible diverticulitis.

The most accurate test to detect colon disease early and save lives is a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy may be required before the age of 50 or more than once every five to ten years if you have a history of inflammatory bowel disease, or a family member such as a parent, sibling, or child who had colorectal cancer or adenomas.

Ways to Save

Colonoscopy pricing can vary significantly. It’s not uncommon to find colonoscopy pricing below $1,000 or above $3,000. Make sure the price of your colonoscopy covers physician, facility, and anesthesia.
