Chest X-rays before surgery: When you need them - and when you don't

A chest X-ray may not be needed if you don't have signs or symptoms of heart or lung disease. The information from the X-ray rarely helps a doctor manage your care and can result in unnecessary follow-up tests.

A pre-operative chest X-ray can sometimes help identify medical problems that might make it a good idea to delay or even cancel the procedure. Read the Choosing Wisely report to find out when a chest X-ray may be warranted before surgery.
