Heart stress tests before surgery: When you need them - and when you don't

Having a test to check your heart prior to a low-risk surgery may not be helpful and will not decrease the risk of heart complications for most healthy people. In addition if your risk of having a heart problem is low, the tests can produce a false-positive result that could cause anxiety and lead to more tests and an unneeded delay of surgery.

You may need a test to check your heart if you have symptoms and a history of diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease. These tests can show if you are at risk for having a heart attack or change the plan for your surgery.
