Imaging stress tests: When you need them for your heart - and when you don't

Having a test to check your heart prior to a low-risk surgery may not be helpful and will not decrease the risk of heart complications for most healthy people. In addition if your risk of having a heart problem is low, the tests can produce a false-positive result that could cause anxiety and lead to more tests and an unneeded delay of surgery.

A stress test makes your heart work hard and takes pictures of your heart. You may need this test to check your heart if you have chest pain or other symptoms of heart disease and are unable to walk or if you have an electrocardiogram with certain abnormalities. This test will help your doctor see if you have arteries that are blocked and the degree of blockage.

Ways to Save

Many cardiac tests can be performed at the cardiologist’s office, which is usually the least expensive option - cardiac tests performed at a hospital are typically the most expensive option. Patients should ask their doctor if their test can be performed in the office or at an independent imaging facility to save money.

If your doctor can perform the test in their office, and their practice is affiliated with or located at a hospital, confirm with your doctor’s office that the test is performed and billed by the doctor’s practice and not the hospital.
