Imaging tests for heart disease: When you need them - and when you don't

Having a stress test to check your heart may not be helpful for most healthy people who are at low risk for having heart disease. In addition if your risk of having a heart problem is low, the tests can produce a false-positive result that could cause anxiety and lead to more expensive tests. It can also lead to unnecessary treatment with drugs.

If you have symptoms of heart disease such as chest pain or irregular heartbeats, you may need a stress test see if the blood flow to your heart is blocked. A stress test is also helpful if you have an electrocardiogram that shows certain abnormalities. The results of the test can help your doctor decide if you need treatment and if so, what the best treatment options may be.
